Plot Synopsis

Production

The Unbreakable Boy, based on a true story and the novel The Unbreakable Boy, was announced by the Erwin Brothers on November 12, 2020. Jon and Andrew Erwin announced the start of casting that month, revealing their new film followed the true story of Iwoa-native Austin LeRette. Austin story of being diagnosed with a rare bone disease and autism was chronicled by his father in the self-titled book. It would be produced under the Erwin Brothers Kingdom Story production company with production slated to begin in November in Oklahoma City. It would be written and directed by Jon Gunn and produced by Gunn, Jerilyn Esquibel, Downes, and Peter Facinelli.<ref>Ortega, Jeannie. Zachary Levi was cast in the lead role of Austin's father. Lionsgate was also tapped as the studio.<ref>Welk, Brian. Meghann Fahy, Peter Facinelli, Drew Powell, Pilot Bunchy, and Patricia Heaton were set to co-star.<ref></ref> The production began filming in November 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and wrapped on December 18, 2020, after a 23-day shoot in Oklahoma cities such as Oklahoma City, Norman, Midwest City, Okarache, Guthrie, El Reno, and Bethany. Lionsgate gave the film an initial release date of March 18, 2022,<ref>D'Alessandro, Anthony. Reception

The Unbreakable Boy released in theaters on February 21, 2025 to 1,687 theaters in the United States and Canada. It ultimately grossed $850,000 on its first date.<ref>D'Alessandro, Anthony.
