Smurfs (film)
|
Smurfs is a 2025 American live-action animated musical fantasy comedy film inspired by The Smurfs comic book series, which was created by the Belgian comics artist Peyo. As a reboot of The Smurfs film series, the film is helmed by director Chris Miller and features a screenplay by Pam Brady. Rihanna, who also serves as a producer for the film, lends her voice to the character of Smurfette, alongside a talented ensemble cast that includes James Corden, Nick Offerman, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Jimmy Kimmel, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter, Maya Erskine, Kurt Russell, and John Goodman. In February 2022, it was reported that Lafig S.A. and IMPS, now referred to as Peyo Company, the proprietors of the Smurfs brand, had entered into a partnership with Paramount Animation to create several animated Smurfs films, with the inaugural project being a musical. Brady was assigned to compose the screenplay, with production slated to commence later that year. By June 2022, Miller had been appointed as the film's director, and by April 2023, Rihanna had come on board as both a voice actor and producer,
in addition to writing and recording original songs. Cinesite provided the animation services. Smurfs made its debut in Brussels on June 28, 2025, and was subsequently released by Paramount Pictures in the United States on July 18. The film garnered unfavorable reviews from critics and was deemed a box-office failure, accumulating a total of $73 million in worldwide earnings.
