Elf is a Christmas comedy film from 2003, directed by Jon Favreau and penned by David Berenbaum. The film features Will Ferrell in the role of Buddy the Elf, a human who was raised by Santa's elves. Upon discovering his true origins, he travels to New York City to find his biological father. Supporting roles are played by James Caan, Zooey Deschanel, Mary Steenburgen, Ed Asner, and Bob Newhart.

 

The film was released in the United States on November 7, 2003, by New Line Cinema. It achieved significant critical and commercial success, earning $220 million globally against a budget of $33 million. Critics particularly lauded Ferrell's portrayal of Buddy. The film also inspired the Broadway musical Elf: The Musical in 2010 and NBC's 2014 stop-motion animated television special Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas. Many consider it a modern classic and it frequently appears on lists of the greatest Christmas films ever made.

Plot

On one Christmas Eve, a baby from an orphanage crawls into Santa Claus's sack upon seeing a teddy bear and is inadvertently taken back to the North Pole. When the infant is found at Santa's workshop, the elves name him Buddy, after the brand label on his diaper, and he is adopted by Papa Elf. As he grows up, Buddy believes he is an elf, but later learns in adulthood that he is actually a human. Papa Elf reveals to Buddy that his biological parents are Walter Hobbs and Susan Wells, the latter having put him up for adoption prior to her passing. Walter currently works as a children's book publisher at the Empire State Building in New York City, completely unaware of Buddy's existence.
