Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, the 16-year-old offspring of chieftain Stoick the Vast, endeavors to invent mechanical devices to compensate for his physical limitations. During a dragon attack, Hiccup manages to shoot down a rare dragon known as a Night Fury using a bolas launcher, but his achievement is met with skepticism. Determined to validate his worth, Hiccup sets out to find the dragon with the intention of killing it. However, upon discovering the dragon injured and vulnerable, he chooses to release it out of compassion. To Hiccup's astonishment, the furious dragon spares his life.
